As Nick Chubb signs his rookie deal, he enters one of the league’s most crowded backfields. Carlos Hyde is a talented back whose skillset will be used, especially after the Browns signed him for $5 mil/year. Chubb is clearly who the Browns organization sees as their early down back for years to come, but he might not get the full reigns this season. Still, it’ll be hard to keep the 2nd round pick off the field, so we should probably expect to see a committee on early downs.

With Duke Johnson still in the fold and even expecting a new deal, he will probably be their passing down back with Hyde likely using his ability in the passing game only when he’s on the field for his share of early down work. With an ADP of 5th-6th round for Hyde, he’s a back I’ll be avoiding in drafts. Chubb is probably too expensive in the 8th round, and Duke’s chance of getting less work doesn’t make him appealing to me in the 8th round in PPR drafts. Unless the situation gets very clear come August, I’ll be avoiding this backfield.
