The 7th round in PPR leagues isn’t too early, but Kerryon Johnson seems like someone who you might end up cutting after a couple of weeks because of lack of touches, and then him possibly becoming a waiver wire target a bit later in the season after an injury in that backfield. Legarrette Blount will most likely have a role on early downs, especially in goal line situations. There’s no reason Theo Riddick should be relegated as he has been one of the best third down backs in the league over the last few years. Whether Ameer Abdullah has a role or not, it’s quite a crowded backfield on a team that has been in the bottom-2 in rushing attempts per game over the last three years.
Johnson has 3-down ability, which his RB coach admits, but they don’t want to give him too much work this early in his career. He played in a run heavy offense in college, and his workload would hit 25+ touches often. He ran between the tackles for the most part, but the Lions GM stated that he would be used to run to the outside… not sure how much stock I would put into that for various reasons. He has good ball skills, and can pass protect but needs improvement. This might not be the year for Kerryon to be as fantasy relevant as he can be, but he’s definitely intriguing in dynasty leagues and for future redraft leagues.
Chris Thompson is going right before Johnson in PPR leagues, and to me, Thompson’s clear role on the Redskins is clearly what I rather have on my team this year. Duke Johnson is a consistent PPR option, and he’s going over Kerryon right now in PPR drafts. There are several receivers going around his ADP who I rather have as well; Devin Funchess, Robert Woods, Randall Cobb… I rather even take a chance on Sammy Watkins’ upside.
Do you think Kerryon Johnson can make a real fantasy impact in his first season? Is his ADP reasonable enough that you would possibly draft him there? Let me know what you think of Kerryon this season!
