It’s easy to put all players who miss games in one bucket, call them injury prone, and completely avoid them. The problem with that is you might miss on a high-upside player when their price is at its potential lowest point, while their injury history actually isn’t indicative of future injury.

In the case of Dalvin Cook, he pulled his hamstring, which is actually not an uncommon occurrence after an ACL tear. He spent the entire offseason recovering from ACL surgery, and hardly had any work when he returned for the third week of preseason last year.

This year, the offseason isn’t being spent recovering, but spent getting stronger and actually being in football shape when the season begins, so he’s actually in a better situation now than when we were drafting him at the same ADP last year. It’s tough to judge Cook on this particular injury, especially when they didn’t let the hamstring completely recover before bringing him back a couple of times last season.

A run-heavy offense for a 3-down back is definitely appealing, especially when you consider Cook’s talent and offense. His offensive line situation can use improvement, but we saw that they were able to have success with volume after John DeFilippo was fired. He can finish as a top-5 back, so understanding why he had an injury-plagued year might help in deciding whether he’s worth the risk in the early to mid 2nd round this year; getting the last 3-down back in a fantasy draft in the second round is almost always a value.

Keep an eye on versatile rookie RB Alexander Mattison in camp, someone who will likely spell Cook throughout the year. The real value in Mattison will be as a late-round handcuff to protect your early round investment in Cook. With Mattison being capable in both the run and pass game, if Cook were to go down, you can have yourself another 3-down back on your hands who you can grab with the last pick in your fantasy draft.
