With a pretty inconsistent year for Sam Darnold, he started to look promising after he made his way back from injury, and he didn’t wait long to start airing it out to Robby Anderson. In the three games after coming back, which happened to be our fantasy playoffs, Anderson averaged 6.7 catches on 10.3 targets for 104 yards and a TD. He was the WR1 in standard and WR2 in PPR in that 3-game span in fantasy points per game only to DeAndre Hopkins. He also received a ridiculous 32% target share, had the 2nd most air yards and 2nd most deep targets during that stretch.
If Adam Gase is the QB guru that a lot of his peers think he is, Sam Darnold can take a step forward, and with that the WR1 should as well. Gase said he wants to do more with Anderson instead of him just being a deep threat, mixing his routes up with intermediate and underneath routes, which would increase his floor. With Gase as the Broncos WRs coach in 2010, Brandon Lloyd was the Broncos WR1 after they just traded away Brandon Marshall, and he led the league in receiving yards and caught 11 TDs that year. Who? And that was with Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow throwing the ball.
We know the ceiling, and we’ve seen Robby hit that ceiling more than a few times over the last two years. As a late 6th/early 7th round pick in 2019 12-team PPR mocks currently, is this the year Robby can become more of a consistent fantasy asset as Sam Darnold takes a step forward? Is he someone you’ll be okay with playing in your flex position Week 1 to raise your team’s upside?
Just as a FYI, Robby has one of the toughest, if not the toughest, CB schedule on paper. However, so many changes happen defensively year to year where I won’t be avoiding him because of it; teams move away from shadowing, teams playing more zone, defenses taking step back, CBs taking step back. It’s one of the reasons I don’t draft a defense when I’m allowed not to, and I won’t be avoiding Robby because of it.
Had a blast recording with @thefantasyshack! Thanks for having me on the pod 🤙🏽
