2024 Preseason Players to Watch: August 17th

Throughout the preseason, we heavily emphasize identifying potential impact players throughout the season that others may not recognize as they aren't necessarily "stars". In our 'Preseason Players to Watch' series, we highlight potentially noteworthy players in each night's game(s) that may be impactful for fantasy football, both in the 2024 season and beyond.

Here are our top players to watch for in tonight's preseason action:

Xavier Worthy (WR - Kansas City Chiefs) - vs DET, 4:00 PM on NFL Network

It hasn't been confirmed yet, but Andy Reid's extensive history of playing the starters (and playing them deep into the 1st half) in the 2nd week of the preseason suggests that we should get our first true look at the Chiefs' 1st-Round rookie WR in Xavier Worthy, who suited up, got a few routes, but ultimately didn't receive a target in last week's preseason opener.

One would expect Worthy to get more of an in-depth opportunity this week, especially seeing as the Chiefs will likely have to rely more heavily on the rookie WR in the early stages of 2024 than initially anticipated with Rashee Rice's likely suspension and the recent injury to Marquise Brown (expected to miss up to 6 weeks). What we see from Worthy's involvement, especially among the starters, could give an indication on if we're looking at a Kadarius Toney/Skyy Moore-esque option for the rookie in fantasy early on or if Worthy could be a viable FLEX option early in the season without Rice/Brown.

Jayden Daniels (QB - Washington Commanders) - at MIA, 7:00 PM

Daniels had one of the headline performances in the opening week of the preseason (excluding the HOF Game) - showing off the deep ball (2/3, 45 yards) and the versatility he has on the ground (1 for 3 yards, 1 TD) in the lone drive he received.

He showed everything we were excited for in the opener, but seeing that on a more extended period (i.e. not just 1 drive) would be a much more definitive marker in making fantasy football owners more comfortable with investing in him as their QB1. We've seen the upside, now we want to see that consistently.

There's still no official word on how much (if at all) Daniels and the starters will play against the Dolphins this week, but one should expect more action from the rookie QB - likely getting about a quarter (or even more) of action.

Another strong showing from him could push him into the conversation of being a top-10 fantasy option at the position in my rankings and would likely draw a similar response from the consensus/ADP.

Russell Wilson (QB - Pittsburgh Steelers) - vs BUF, 7:00 PM on NFL Network

We didn't get to see Wilson at all in the Steelers' preseason opener with the veteran QB just having recently recovered from a calf injury. Well, throughout camp and with a solid preseason debut, Justin Fields seems to have made the QB battle in Pittsburgh a true competition.

We know what we're getting from Wilson at this point in his career - a game manager who likely won't sway an offense too much one way or another (positively or negatively) - but he is in a spot where he will need to earn, or at the very least retain, his hold on the starting job.

It hasn't been confirmed but it sounds like Wilson will be back and start the Steelers' second preseason game at home vs the Bills this week. It'll be our first glimpse at Wilson in a Steelers uniform and ultimately tell us a lot: how Wilson looks, whether he solidifies his spot as the starter, how Wilson (and the entire offense) will fit within the Arthur Smith scheme, and who his go-to target will be (reports of Pat Freiermuth being his favorite target in camp).
